Easter Spending Statistics 2023 – How Much Are We Spending?

Ever wondered how much we spend on candy and Easter-related items? Find out here with the latest Easter spending data for 2023.

Easter is a fun holiday where we get to spend time with our family and friends, enjoying delicious food and gorging on chocolate eggs and candies.

And for those that celebrate it more traditionally, a visit to church on Easter Sunday will help to enhance the feelings of forgiveness, rebirth and redemption that it encompasses too.

However, Easter is also a time where we spend out money on things like specialty food, candy, decorations, flowers and special Easter clothing.

So it's good to look at some general Easter spending statistics to get a rough idea of what we should expect to be spending and on what this year.

And to do that I've used the following surveys and reports to compile a list of the latest Easter spending trends for 2023.

  • RetailMeNot - Q2 '23 shopping survey from January 2023.
  • National Confectioners Association - Sweet Insights online survey from December 2022.

How Much Money Will Be Spent For Easter 2023?

Easter is a popular time of year with 81% of Americans surveyed by the National Retail Federation saying they were planning to celebrate it in 2023.

So how much was spent over the Easter holidays this year?

Well the National Retail Federation were estimating that a total of $24 billion would be spent during Easter.

Which was the highest that Easter spending has ever been and an increase of $3.2 billion on the previous years total.

With the most money was being spent on food, with a total of $7.3 billion being spent on Easter feasting.

How Much Does The Average Person Plan To Spend On Easter 2023?

2023 was also a record year for Easter spending per household with the average spend coming it at $192.01 (National Retail Federation).

This was up by % from the previous years figure of $169.79 and a big increase of % from the 2013 average of $145.13.

And when asked why they shopped for Easter-related items 63% put it down to tradition, while 31% enjoyed it because it was something they could do with their family and friends (National Retail Federation).

This was especially true of people in the 18-24 age range, as 44% of youngsters loved Easter shopping with their loved ones.

Sales and promotions were also good at this time of year too, being a reason to shop for 29% of those surveyed.

What Are Easter Shoppers Planning To Buy For Easter 2023?

The most popular Easter purchase in 2023 was candy, with 90% of people surveyed saying they would be buying some for Easter (National Retail Federation).

This figure has stayed steady through the years, meaning chocolate egg sellers can rest easy at Easter time!

Following closely behind was food, with 89% buying things especially for their Easter feast, while 65% were treating their loved ones to an Easter gift.

Easter clothing was popular with 53% of consumers while 50% were planning to buy Easter decorations.

And finally 47% of people were buying greeting cards to give out and 44% were purchasing flowers.

With the Greeting Card Association estimating that around 40 million greeting cards are sold for Easter every year.

Where Are People Doing Their Easter Holiday Shopping In 2023?

When it comes to where people are spending their money over Easter in 2023, the most popular choice was shopping at a discount store, with 54% of consumers planning to shop at one (National Retail Federation).

Next up were department stores which were on the agenda for 42% of people, while 22% were planning to use a local small business.

20% were going to buy something at a specialty store such as a florist, jewelry store or greeting cards shop, while 13% were looking for something at a specialty clothing store.

And 33% of consumers were planning to make life easier and shop online instead.

Walmart was a big winner with Easter shoppers, as the RetailMeNot survey found 76% of consumers planned to do some Easter shopping there.

While 40% were shopping online with Amazon, 36% were visiting a Target store, and 13% would be using wholesale retailers such as Sam's and Costco.

What Are Easter Shoppers Spending The Most Money On In 2023?

The biggest expense for households over the Easter holidays in 2023 was food, with an average spend of $58.11 being posted (National Retail Federation).

This figure has jumped by 8.4% since 2021, which is in line with inflation and may be due to rising food costs across the board.

Clothing ($31.73), gifts ($30.66) and candy ($26.31) were next up, while flowers accounted for $14.24 of consumer's average Easter spend.

And people celebrating Easter also spent an average of $13.48 on decorations and $9.12 on greeting cards.

How Much Is Being Spent On Easter Candy In 2023?

As we've mentioned already, 90% of people are planning to buy candy over Easter in 2023 at an average spend of $26.31 per household (National Retail Federation).

Which equates to a total spend of $3.3 billion dollars, an increase from the $3 billion figure that was posted for Easter candy sales in 2021 and 2022.

And when it comes to the most popular type of Easter candy in 2023, Reese's peanut butter eggs was the big winner in the RetailMeNot survey with 51% of the vote.

With chocolate bunnies (17%), Cadbury eggs (13%), jellybeans (12%) and Peeps (7%) being a fair way behind.

While the Natonal Confectioners Association found that 44% of Americans said that chocolate eggs or bunnies were their favourite Easter treat.

With jellybeans (20%), candy coated eggs (18%), marshmallow candies (15%) or other (3%) rounding up the list.

What Are People Planning To Do For Easter 2023?

When asked what they planned to do for Easter Sunday, 56% said they'd be cooking a holiday meal (National Retail Federation).

While 50% were going to visit family and friends on the day.

43% were going to keep Easter traditions going by visiting church, and 34% were getting involved with an Easter egg hunt.

And there were 32% of people surveyed that just planned to put their feet up and watch TV.

Easter is a lovely holiday where we get to spend time with our loved ones and enjoy all the lovely food.

And I hope after reading through these Easter spending statistics for 2023 you've got a better idea of what you should expect to spend over Easter this year.

As the food, decorations, candy and other Easter-related items can all quickly add up if you're not careful.
