Mother’s Day Gift Statistics 2023 – What To Spend On Mom

Whether that is by taking them out for a nice meal, pampering them, buying them a gift or flowers, or simply spending some quality time together.

You want to make sure they feel as special as you know they are.

So to help you do this we thought we'd take a look at the very latest Mother's Day gift statistics to see just what we're buying our Moms and how much we typically spend on them.

And we did this by analysing the latest Mother's Day surveys from the following retail organisations and companies to get an idea of the general Mother's Day shopping trends:

  • National Retail Federation - Mother's Day survey from April 2023.
  • RetailMeNot - Mother's Day survey from April 2020.

How Much Are We Spending For Mother's Day In 2023?

Spending on Mother's Day has been rising consistently over the years, with the total spend in 2023 expected to hit $35.7 billion (National Retail Federation).

This is up from an estimated $31.7 billion from the previous year and is significantly more than the $20 billion we expected to spend on our Dads for Father's Day in 2022 (National Retail Federation). 

While the average Mother's Day spend of $274.02 per person is a 11.5% increase on the previous year ($245.76) and a whopping 62% increase on the average spend from 10 years ago ($168.84).

With the highest spenders being in the 35-44 age bracket, spending an average of $382.26 per household.

And a whopping $1.2 billion was expected to be spent just on greeting cards for Mother's Day 2023, so it's a big day for card retailers too (National Retail Federation).

With the Greeting Card Association estimating that as many as 113 million Mother's Day cards are sold in America every year!

What Are The Most Popular Mother's Day Gifts For 2023?

The National Retail Federation's Mother's Day 2023 survey found that people were planning to buy the following gifts for their Moms.

  • Flowers - 74% planning to buy with an average spend of $24.43 per person.
  • Special outings (such as dinner) - 60% planning to buy with an average spend of $43.29 per person.
  • Gift cards - 54% planning to buy with an average spend of $26.29 per person.
  • Clothing/Accessories - 48% planning to buy with an average spend of $25.74 per person.
  • Jewelry - 44% planning to buy with an average spend of $59.90 per person.
  • Personal Service - 34% planning to buy with an average spend of $23.06 per person.
  • Houseware/Gardening Tools - 31% planning to buy with an average spend of $15.51 per person.
  • Other - 29% planning to buy something else with an average spend of $9.24 per person.
  • Books/CDs - 28% planning to buy with an average spend of $7.00 per person.
  • Electronics - 25% planning to buy with an average spend of $30.69 per person.

So flowers were the most popular gift choice with 74% of people planning to get their Mom a bunch for Mother's Day at an average spend of $24.43.

While the highest average spend was on jewelry, at $59.90 per household for the 44% that planned to get some for their Mom.

Aside from the above gift categories, 46% of sons and daughters were interested in getting their Moms a subscription box for Mother's Day (National Retail Federation).

While 31% were planning to give them an experience gift rather than a physical one (National Retail Federation).

And the most important thing when choosing a gift for Mother's Day for those surveyed was finding a gift that was unique or different, which was a big factor for 47% of people (National Retail Federation).

This was closely followed by getting a gift that would create a special memory, which was favoured by 42% of gift shoppers.

Where Are We Buying Our Mother's Day Gifts In 2023?

According to the National Retail Federation survey, the most popular place to buy Mother's Day gifts was a tie between department stores and online stores, with 34% saying they would shop either in store or online this year.

Speciality stores such as Jewellers, florists were next on the list with 30% using them for their gifts.

24% said they'd buy their Mother's Day gifts at a local small business, while 23% would shop in a discount store and 13% said they'd use a speciality clothing store.

And finally 3% of people were planning to buy gifts for their Mom via a catalogue.

And unsurprisingly women seem to have a better idea when it comes to buying Mother's Day gifts, as 43% of men say they rely on retailers for gifting inspiration for their Moms compared to just 33% of women.

What Do Moms Really Want For Mother's Day?

We've seen that flowers, gift cards, and special outings were popular choices for people buying gifts for Mother's Day.

But what do Moms really want?

Well the good news is we seem to be getting it right with our choices.

As the RetailMeNot Mother's Day survey found that the top gift wanted by 35% of Moms was to be treated to a nice dinner, either in a restaurant or at home.

This was followed by gift cards, which were desired by 28% of mothers, while spa days were popular with 21%.

And a nice bunch of flowers remained a desired choice for 19% of Moms, meaning the florists will stay happy on Mother's Day for many years to come!

Inflation Has Affected Gift Buying For Mother's Day In 2023

Inflation in the United States has been highlighted by a rise on the Consumer Price Index of 6.4% between January 2022 and January 2023 (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

And this has had an impact on many American's preparations for Mother's Day 2023, with 72% of those celebrating it saying they have noticed higher prices for potential gifts than previous years (National Retail Federation).

So to deal with these rises 44% said that they planned to take advantage of any sales or promotions when choosing a Mother's Day gift.

While 34% said they would cut back in other areas of their lives so they could treat their Mom on her special day.

Your Mom is special so make sure you treat her that way on Mother's Day.

As spending some quality time with her and treating her to a nice gift can really make her day.
